What have we been up to?

When I start getting emails asking, “Are you guys okay? What happened to the blog?” I know it’s time to jump on here and give you all an update. We’ve had a great summer and it’s not over yet. We’re still pulling the summer honey, and even with this latest bout of rain, it’s still coming in strong. Spring, however, was something special to talk about. The best Spring honey harvest we’ve ever had!

Our family took quite a few trips this summer- beginning with a trip to Washington DC to tour the monuments and visit some friends.

…We really came for the ice cream.

…We really came for the ice cream.

And ended with a trip to Washington State, where we dove into cold lakes to beat the 110 degree heat wave.

In the middle of the summer we enjoyed the Pickaway County Fair, our new horse Winnie, and our youngest daughter learned to ride a bike.

#2 We’ll be hosting a “Solar Energy Open House” in conjunction with Paradise Energy Solutions, who installed solar panels on our barn. This will be on October 29th. More information and exact time will follow. Anyone interested in learning about the potential to install solar panels on your own home or barn is welcome to attend. (something was mentioned about free food, too)

Thanks for checking in and we promise it won’t be 3 months until our next blog post. The kids are in school, which means I have a little more free time to write and connect.

Honeyrun Farm Partners with The Buzz Maker to Save Bees

Jayne Barnes

Knowing that one in four North American bee species face extinction and that one in three bites of food is thanks to a pollinator, The Buzz Maker launched the Save Ohio Bees initiative with Ohio artists and Honeyrun Farm.

The mission is to raise awareness and funds to protect bees and pollinator habitat while supporting local artists and encouraging grassroots climate action.
“We believe in the power of small business to address big challenges,” said Tracy Teuscher, APR, president of The Buzz Maker. “We’re leveraging community, collaboration, and creativity to empower others to take small actions that make a big difference in reversing pollinator loss and restoring biodiversity.”

This year’s campaign launches May 20, World Bee Day, to benefit The Wilderness Center (TWC) of Ohio and The Pollinator Partnership. Artists, including The Bee Collective will donate a portion of net proceeds with a matching gift from The Buzz Maker through June 30.

Pollinator projects and special events are part of this year’s lineup including a free virtual Bee Bootcamp scheduled June 8.

Visit the Save Ohio Bees marketplace to shop local art and hive products, and find bee and plant guides, video resources, garden projects, local nurseries and more.

Pickaway County Ag Days

Jayne Barnes

We were pleased to participate in the Pickaway County Virtual Ag Days, which was designed to provide interesting and engaging youth-focused education that builds awareness of food and farming in the community. This is part 1 of a 3 part series that was shown to 4th graders in Pickaway County, but we believe it is interesting for bee-lovers of all ages.

The cast of Honeyrun Farm - Japanese TV Stars

Jayne Barnes

Back in early January, we were contacted by the Japanese TV network NHK (which is the US equivalent of PBS) and were asked if we wanted to be interviewed for one of their shows. It's designed to teach young Japanese children English phrases and words, while also teaching them about different places and cultures throughout the world. After several hours of Skype meetings and interviews, here is the finished product (10 minutes long.) It was a great experience for our kids. If you reach the end you will finally know how to spell our names, and see a cameo by Cliff our steer and Lilac the goat. Watch the video here (sorry I couldn’t embed it.) Enjoy!

The Honeyfest is also coming back in 2021! Mark you calendar for September 10th and 11th. For more information about this event visit http://centralohiobeekeeper.com/ and follow them on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/Lithopolis-Honeyfest-140715752615419

Isaac has been busy splitting hives and attempting to prevent swarms, however the bees seem to be one step ahead of us and we’ve had plenty of swarms over the past week. Luckily some hives swarm right out the back door at an easy spot for us to catch them and get them in a new spacious hive.

Seth has been back to help us for a few days. So thankful for his work ethic!

And the last big news of the week, we have a new member of the barnyard! Meet Winnie. My sister found this horse for our daughter Maizy about 2 years ago. Maizy has dreamed of having a horse ever since she was very young. My sister was able to care for Winnie for the past few years until we were ready to take on full ownership. This was the biggest reason we rented extra land for added hay fields around our property. We have a lot to learn about owning a horse but we’re leaving the studying up to Maizy. Send advice if you have any.

One happy 11 year old. Some dreams do come true.
